“High Noon” at midnight in the desert
A three hours car drive south east of Los Angeles you’ll find Borrego Springs, a small town in the middle of the Ansa Borrego Desert. The city is shielded by mountains, which rise north, west and south of Borrego Springs. Due to this protection, it really can get hot in Borrego Springs. You should expect over 90°F (30°C) in spring time, and easily over 110°F (43° C) in summer.
Apart from amazing landscapes, Borrego Springs is well worth a visit for seeing the sculptures of Ricardo Breceda, a self-taught metal works artist. Ricardo’s sculptures range from animals that lived in the area hundreds of thousands of years ago, over dinosaurs to phantasy creatures. Approximately 130 of those life-sized and over life-sized sculptures are located in the Ansa Borrego Desert and can be visited free of charge.
Those two sculptures of a scorpion and a grasshopper really excel at playing Cary Cooper and Ian MacDonald in the 1952 Western classic “High Noon”. I am just still guessing who is who?
