The times, where Horseshoe Bend was purely an insider tip, have long gone. Today it is an iconic place of the South West of the United States, visited by approx. 2 million tourist per year. The publicity is well deserved. It is an awe-inspiring sight, where photos hardly do justice. Close to the city of Page (Arizona), the Colorado River makes its way through a red sandstone canyon, flowing 300 meter or 1.000 ft below the lookout.
If you want to see Horseshoe Bend with you own eyes, better don’t wait too long: the Colorado River is constantly eroding the neck of the bend. So at some point in time, the river will break through the neck. As consequence, the bend will fall dry, but a spectacular natural bridge will likely be the new “tourist magnet”. And I bet, you still have a year or two ;)
