Picture yourself in a lush rain forest, where countless birds provide a fitting background noise. After a short walk on a winding path the trees open just a little bit, creating a secluded space and a perfect setting for this 20 meter or 66 ft high cascade. Both the shadows casted by the trees and the spray of the falls deliver a welcome refreshment on a hot summer day.
The Purakaunui Falls are located in the Catlins, an area in the southeastern corner of the South Island of New Zealand. The Catlins are blessed with some impressive waterfalls, with the Purakaunui Falls being in a well-deserved top position on the list.
